The ESA's
goal to create a Story-sharing Community is one such idea. Dr. Anna Chodos, a medical doctor, has created a marvellous website called 80over80fs.com, where, over the past three years, she has written stories on 80 people over 80 from San Francisco.
A geriatrician, she describes her reason for doing so as a way of combating ageism, which is all too prevalent in today’s society.
Best of all, she and her team also provide a brief description of their approach to the topic:
“The questions we asked were to get a snapshot of the person, their recent experiences and their outlook.
It was not a life review or biography. We asked about:
- How people describe themselves
- What they like (or don’t) about San Francisco
- Pandemic experiences
- Advice for others
- Defining moments in their life
- What makes them happy.”
At Embracing SuperAges, and here again I agree with Anna, anyone who makes it to their 80th year of living, which means 79 in our society, qualifies as a Generation Beyond 80.
In conclusion, ESA needs volunteers to write up a member’s story because not everyone has the confidence to write their own story. We need volunteers to interview other members and record or make notes for the writer to create the story or a video story. If you join and have these skills, please add them to the Embracing SuperAger team.
